Match Preview:

The Atlanta Braves seek a season-high fourth straight win this afternoon in the opener of a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

The Braves went 6-3 on their recent nine-game homestand, a residency they capped with a three-game sweep of Toronto. Atlanta next hits the road for seven straight and are 12-8 as the visiting club this year.

Atlanta got two home runs from Brian McCann in Sunday's 10-2 victory, which was sparked with a seven-run seventh inning.

"This is a huge, huge win (Sunday) going into this road trip," McCann said. "We've got to keep it up, playing great baseball as of late."

Kelly Johnson finished 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBI, while Diory Hernandez added his first two career hits and two runs scored for the Braves, who are now 1 1/2 games within first-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

Chipper Jones did not start any of the three games versus Toronto after aggravating a right toe injury on Thursday, but he did pinch-hit on Sunday and drove in the first run of the big seventh frame. Yunel Escobar, meanwhile, sat out Saturday and Sunday due to a strained right hip flexor.

Atlanta turns today to Javier Vazquez, who is 4-3 with a 3.39 earned run average this year and 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in four road starts. The righty, though, did pick up his first home win of 2009 on Wednesday, as he allowed just one unearned run and three hits over five innings versus Colorado.

Vazquez is 5-6 with a 3.38 ERA in 14 games versus the Giants and has pitched well at AT&T Park, where he is 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA in six starts.

While the Braves have been rolling as of late, the Giants dropped Sunday's rubber match with Seattle, 5-4, to lose for the ninth time in their last 11 games. Barry Zito took the loss after going 6 1/3 innings and yielding five runs on as many hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

"I didn't really get in a groove today," said Zito. "I had some four-pitch walks, which is inexcusable."

Fred Lewis had a solo homer, while Aaron Rowand and Edgar Renteria drove in a run apiece for San Francisco. With Pablo Sandoval out with a strained right elbow and regular catcher Bengie Molina in need of a break, Eli Whiteside had his contract purchased prior to the game and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Sandoval, who was hurt on Saturday, will be examined again today for the Giants.

Though 0-3 with a 5.26 ERA over his last five outings, today's starter for San Francisco, Jonathan Sanchez, is coming off one of his best performances of the season. On Wednesday in San Diego, the lefty allowed just a pair of runs on two hits and three walks over six innings, but took a hard-luck 2-1 loss.

Sanchez is 1-4 with a 4.74 ERA this year, but is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three home starts. He has struggled versus Atlanta, going 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three games against the club, just one of those starts.

The Giants won five of seven versus the Braves last year, taking two of three at home.

Match Preview:

Sunderland play host to Chelsea on the final day of the season knowing they must win to guarantee they avoid the drop on 'Survival Sunday'.

Ricky Sbragia's side currently hold a two-point cushion over bitter local rivals Newcastle, who occupy the final relegation berth, but have a marginally worse goal difference than the Tyneside outfit.

Should Newcastle take all three points from their trip to Aston Villa and Hull City defeat Manchester United at the KC Stadium, then Sunderland would have to beat Chelsea to stay up.

But if results elsewhere go in their favour and the Tigers fail to win or the Magpies are beaten, then the Wearsiders will remain in the top flight regardless of how they fare against Guus Hiddink's men.

Sunderland had the chance to secure their own status on Monday at Portsmouth, but they threw away the lead seconds after going in front and slipped to a 3-1 reverse.

Wearside fans must now hope that Chelsea are distracted by their forthcoming FA Cup final against Everton as Guus Hiddink brings his star-studded and in-form squad to the North East for his final Premier League game at the helm.

The Blues have an outside chance of overtaking Liverpool to claim second in the table but must claim all three points on Sunday and hope that the Reds are beaten by Spurs at Anfield, while goal difference is also in the Reds' favour.

History

History and statistics are not in Sunderland's favour, with the Black Cats having never won on the final day in the Premier League, although Chelsea's most recent last-fixture success came at the end of the 2003/04 campaign.

And in their last eight league games against the North East club, Chelsea have found the net 21 times, including a 5-0 Stamford Bridge success this season, while Sunderland have breached the Blues defence only twice in their last nine attempts.

Midfielder Steed Malbranque could miss out against Chelsea after he sustained a hip injury in the Fratton Park reverse.

Sbragia will give the Frenchman every opportunity to prove his fitness, while George McCartney (calf) has returned to training but is unlikely to start.

Personal glory is still at stake for Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka as he leads the Premier League's Golden Boot race on 18 alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman, who bagged possibly the easiest hat-trick of his career in the Stamford Bridge rout of the Black Cats back in November, is expected to lead the line alongside Didier Drogba.

With a week to go before the FA Cup final at Wembley the following Saturday, Hiddink could stick with the players on duty for the routine 2-0 win over Blackburn last time out.

Michael Ballack is available after missing the win over Bolton with flu while defender Ricardo Carvalho and midfielder Deco are also in contention after recovering from hamstring problems.

Possible starting XIs:

Sunderland: Fulop, Bardsley, Davenport, Ferdinand, Collins, Tainio, Malbranque, Whitehead, Leadbitter, Richardson, Jones.

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Terry, A Cole, Essien, Mikel, Lampard, Malouda, Drogba, Anelka.

Match Preview:

Shakhtar Donetsk v Werder Bremen, UEFA Cup final, May 20, 2009

Following a marathon European campaign, in which both these sides saw off local rivals in the semifinals, the stage is set for the last ever UEFA Cup final in Istanbul.

Shakhtar would be the first Ukrainian side to win a European trophy should they emerge triumphant (13/8 to win) and their record in the competition this season suggests they can see off the German side.

Veteran Mircea Lucescu has watched his team defeat Tottenham, CSKA Moscow, Marseille and Dynamo Moscow in a run that has coincided with a real upturn in form. After a poor start to the Ukrainian Premier League and then elimination from the Champions League, Shakhtar turned their form around and claimed one of their most important ever victories with the semi-final win over bitter rivals Dynamo Kiev.

Much like Zenit St. Petersburg in last year’s final, Shakhtar Donetsk come into this game with a line-up full of talent that is not that well known by the rest of Europe. The Brazilians Ilsinho, Jadson (8/1 to be the first scorer), Fernandinho, Luiz Adriano and Willian (16/1 to score first) bring a bit of Samba flair to the side.

And there are also two fine Ukrainian talents in defender Dmytro Chyhrysnkyi, whose name seems destined to be butchered for the rest of his career and Oleksandr Hladkyi, a 21-year-old striker who will likely start this match as a sub but represents a bright future for Shakhtar.

One player who may be worth a flutter for first goal, or to score at any time, is Darijo Srna, the Croatian international has scored five goals this season, four of which have come from free-kicks. (Srna is 20/1 to score first, 6/1 to score at any time.)

Whilst Werder Bremen have the experience in Europe, having been a regular club in the Champions League in recent years, they are without a number of players, including Brazilian schemer Diego who is suspended for the final and due to a thigh injury may well have played his last game for the club.

Bremen are also without striker Hugo Almeida and defender Per Mertesacker and there will be much expectation resting on the shoulders of Mesut Ozil, a Turkish-born schemer who made his international debut for Germany in February. (Ozil is 12/1 to be the man of the match.)

There are also injury worries over captain Frank Baumann and strikers Claudio Pizarro and Markus Rosenberg. If Pizarro does play he could well get on the scoresheet, as he has done five times in the UEFA Cup already this season, including the double that saw off AC Milan in February.

Without Diego and with Shakhtar brimming with confidence (ten wins in their last 11 games) as well as chasing a reported personal win bonus of more than 185,000 euros paid by chairman Rinat Akhmetov, the Ukrainian side should be heavy favourites to win on Wednesday night.
